Resumo:
This research has as its central theme the humanized care of hospitalized patients diagnosed with an incurable disease, and its general objective is to investigate, through literature review, how spirituality with people with a life-threatening disease, and through the imminence of death, can contribute to the preparation and confrontation of this reality and add a higher quality to their last days of life. The methodology applied for this research consists of a qualitative bibliographic review referring to this theme. The three chapters of this paper address the following approaches: the first will deal with aspects that involve the process of illness and dying, which may comprise a painful experience in the physical, psychological, social and spiritual realms. The second chapter will discuss the hospital chaplaincy constituted and integrated with the global hospital services as a specialty with a multidisciplinary team in humanized patient care. The third chapter will address practical issues of caring through spiritual assistance and the use of elements such as prayer, the Bible, and the benefits of forgiveness, both from the perspective of science and from the perspective of the Christian faith.
