Abstract:
One of the biggest problems in our society is religious intolerance. Many people have great resistance to respecting other people's religion, something that is reflected in the school environment. The theme of the research is Religious Education, as a curricular component, as a tool to combat religious intolerance in the school space. For the research, the methodology used is bibliographic, based on studies carried out on religious intolerance at school and the possibilities of coping through Religious Education. The objective is to verify the extent to which Religious Education can act as a tool in the face of religious intolerance in the school environment. To this end, the research has the specific objectives of verifying the social function of the school, analyzing the curricular component of Religious Education in its curriculum and its competencies based on the National Common Curricular Base and then proposing, as a product of the professional master's degree, a practical intervention guide for a culture of peace at school. A culture of peace is understood as a set of values, attitudes, traditions, behaviors and lifestyles that are based on respect for life, the elimination of violence and the promotion and practice of non-violence through education, dialogue and cooperation. This set also aligns with the principles of freedom, justice, democracy, tolerance, solidarity, cooperation, pluralism, cultural diversity, dialogue and understanding at all levels of society and between nations. The culture of peace is one of the transversal themes that refer to Religious Education and, as such, can be developed with a view to religious intolerance at school. School, in turn, is the most appropriate place to promote reflection on cultural, artistic and religious diversity, as diversity in this locus mirrors social diversity. Education is the indispensable tool for transforming intolerant behaviors in the school environment and Religious Education is an important instrument for propagating religious tolerance within a modern society with individuals who have behaviors consistent with freedom of expression. It is concluded that the culture of peace, based on Religious Education, ends up leading to a broader culture of peace since it deals with diversity in general. Thus, the proposed guide goes beyond religious intolerance and also addresses diversities at school.
